Sword games

Hey, I'm looking to make a game where the character kills enemies using a sword. I've tried putting the sword inside the character animation, but making it a movieclip and giving it an instance name, but it doesn't work. I've also tried just making an animation of the character swinging and setting a Boolean "attacking" to true if a key is pressed so if the enemy collides while attacking is true then it goes to a different frame.

Could someone send me an example of a working sword attack please?

ok, i dont have an example. but when referring to the sword in the character did you do it similar to this?

_root.playerCharacter.sword

if not, thats probably why it didnt work.
